‘America is ours once again’, celebrates Weverton, champion with Palmeiras of the Copa Libertadores

Verdao became the first team to win two Libertadores in a row since Boca Juniors obtained the 2000 and 2001 editions.

“America is ours once again,” said goalkeeper Weverton, one of Palmeiras’ figures, after winning the Copa Libertadores 2021 against Flamengo on Saturday in Montevideo.

“It is not easy to beat two Libertadores, we are happy,” said the Brazilian team goalkeeper at the end of the game that his team won 2-1 at the legendary Centenario Stadium to win its second Libertadores in a row and third in its history, after that of 1999.

“It was tough, it was difficult, I think this was our fourth final of the season, we did not win any championship, but I want to say praise God, everyone is happy (…) I love you, Palmeiras,” he added.

Before the clash in the Uruguayan capital, the Esmeraldas lost the Brazilian Super Cup against Flamengo, the Recopa Sudamericana against Argentine Defense and Justice and the Paulista Championship against Sao Paulo. In addition, they have no chance of winning the Brasileirao 2021.

With their victory this Saturday, Palmeiras became the first team to win two Libertadores in a row since Boca Juniors obtained the 2000 and 2001 editions.

With the victory, Verdao reached Gremio, Sao Paulo and Santos, each with three, as the most winning Brazilian teams in the main club competition in America, whose record is led by Independiente de Avellaneda with 7 titles. (D)
