Belarusian tennis player Arina Sobolenko recalled her desire to end her career due to threats
Belarusian tennis player Arina Sobolenko recalled her desire to end her career due to threats and worsening attitudes towards her from the public after the start of the SVO in Ukraine. This is reported by TASS with reference to an episode of the series Break Point, which is being released on the Netflix platform.
According to the second racket of the world, she was threatened on social networks, and others looked at her strangely. “Everyone started talking about the need to ban all players from Russia and Belarus. I felt that everyone hated me because of my country,” Sobolenko said.
The Belarusian added that she decided to continue her career in memory of her father, who died in 2019. “It was my father’s dream, he would not have accepted it,” said the tennis player.
On June 2, Sobolenko refused to participate in an open post-match press conference at Roland Garros, saying she did not feel safe answering journalists’ questions. Instead, the Belarusian athlete spoke to a group of media professionals selected by the tournament organizers.
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) did not completely remove the Russians and Belarusians. They take part in tournaments in a neutral status.
