Russian fencer Kobzeva was suspended from the European Championship after a complaint from Ukraine
Russian saber fencer Valeria Kobzeva has been suspended from participation in the European Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The list of athletes is published on the website of the International Fencing Federation (FIE).
According to Inside the Games, the participation of the athlete caused dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, as she supported the SVO. “Kobzeva’s actions sparked discussions about the role of athletes as public figures and the impact of their statements on international relations,” they complained.
On June 13, the Russian Fencing Federation published a list of athletes who will participate in the European Championship. Among them was Kobzeva.
In March, the FIE allowed Russian athletes to participate in tournaments in a neutral status. However, the organization later denied entry to many athletes, including Olympic champions Yana Yegoryan, Sofia Velikaya, Sofia Pozdnyakova and Olga Nikitina.
