UEFA may suspend referee Marciniak from Champions League final over racism allegations
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) will consider the case of Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, appointed to the final match of the Champions League, accused of displaying racism. It is reported by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
It is noted that the organization took these allegations seriously and will consider all evidence in the coming week. If Marciniak’s guilt is established, he could be suspended from work in the Champions League final.
On June 1, Sky Sport reported that the anti-discrimination organization Never Again had accused Marciniak of links to the activities of a far-right political party in Poland. Later on Instagram (the social network is banned in the Russian Federation; it belongs to the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia and banned) the arbitrator stated that he “always distances himself from manifestations of racism, anti-Semitism and intolerance.”
The 2023 Champions League final will be held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul. The match will take place on June 10. Russian clubs do not take part in European competitions in the 2022/2023 season according to the decision of the Union of European Football Associations.
