Former Lokomotiv coach Yuri Semin shared his opinion on the most suitable opponent for the Russian national team in the 2022 World Cup play-offs. His words are quoted by “Championship.com”.
“I think each of us will answer that in the play-offs of the Russian national team it is best to meet with North Macedonia,” the specialist said. Semin noted that if you study the position of North Macedonia and any other opponent in the ranking, a fairly clear picture emerges. “A trip to Qatar is at stake, and we want to go there and play at the World Cup,” he said, and stressed that the national team is facing very important and difficult matches.
Earlier, the former head coach of the national team Stanislav Cherchesov called Turkey the most preferred opponent for the national team. In his opinion, the Russians have played with this team most often lately, therefore they are well aware of the capabilities of Turkish footballers.
The Russian national team will recognize the opponent in the first round of play-offs on November 26. In addition to North Macedonia and Turkey, teams from Wales, the Czech Republic or Poland can become them. In case of victory in the first match, Valery Karpin’s team will need to win one more meeting to reach the World Championship. The play-offs will take place in March 2022.
