Away from Bellingham, Manchester City advances to sign Kovacic from Chelsea

O Manchester City has a new target in the ball market after staying away from midfielder Jude Bellingham, close to closing a deal with Real Madrid. According to the journalist Fabricius Romanthe English club has advanced by hiring Mateo Kovacic, from Chelsea.

The team maintains conversations with the player’s surroundings and is confident of reaching a common denominator in the coming days. Outside the plans of Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s new coach, the Croatian wants to transfer to another team next season.

As his contract with the Blues expires in 2024, the London club is willing to trade him to guarantee at least an amount in return. O Bayern Munchen would also be interested in the athlete, but Kovacic prefers City because of Pep Guardiola.

Kovacic, 29, started his professional career at Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia, in 2010. Three years later, he headed to Inter Milana team he defended for two seasons, before landing in Real Madrid.

In Spain, the player won nine titles, among them, the Champions League 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18, in addition to a Spanish Championship.

Without space, he was loaned to Chelsea in 2018 and, a year later, the English club guaranteed his permanent stay by buying him for around 45 million euros (R$ 195 million at the time). There, Kovacic won another Champions League, in 2020/21, against Manchester City.

In total, the Croatian already has more than 220 matches for Chelsea, with six goals scored and 15 assists granted. In the current season, he participated in 27 games of the Premier League. Kovacic has also played three world Cups for their selection (2014, 2018 and 2022).
