French sports minister calls Djokovic’s statement at Roland Garros belligerent
French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera commented on Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic’s political statement at Roland Garros. She is quoted by Mondo.
According to the minister, the athlete’s words about the Kosovo Serbs are inappropriate for a major tournament, since the principle of neutrality should operate on the courts. In this regard, she condemned the act of the tennis player.
“When we convey messages that are meant to protect human rights, messages that unite people around human values, the athlete is free to express himself,” said Udea-Kastera. At the same time, she called Djokovic’s statement a militant and very political incident, “which should not be repeated.”
Earlier, the Serbian defeated American Alexander Kovacevic in the first round of the tournament with a score of 6:7, 6:2, 7:6 (7:1). After the game, he wrote on the camera the phrase “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence.” Later, the athlete said that he would do it again, despite possible sanctions from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
