During the award ceremony, the Ukrainian, who won the tournament in the weight category up to 74 kilograms, did not shake hands with Amir Reza Mesforush, who took third place. Mesforushu tried twice to congratulate the winner, but his gesture was ignored. At the same time, the Ukrainian shook hands with the silver-winning South African Marcel Vorster.
The World Championship was held from 20 to 27 May in Sun City (South Africa). Russian athletes did not take part in the tournament by decision of the International Powerlifting Federation.
On May 29, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted to impose sanctions against Iran until 2073. In the West, Iran is accused of supplying Russia with drones for use in a special operation in Ukraine.
