Ukrainian tennis player Kostyuk did not expect a whistle for refusing to shake hands with Sobolenko
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk appreciated the whistle in her address from the fans of Roland Garros for refusing to shake hands with the Belarusian Arina Sabolenko. Her words are quoted by the Daily Express.
“I would like to see how people react to this in 10 years. I don’t think they will feel very good. I feel fine, ”said the athlete. She stressed that she did not expect such a reaction, and felt that people should be ashamed of their behavior.
Earlier on May 28, Sobolenko defeated Kostyuk in the first round of the tournament with a score of 6:3, 6:2. After the game, the Ukrainian refused to shake hands with her opponent, for which the fans booed her. Sobolenko said that she could imagine a reaction from the Ukrainian side, therefore, she does not consider the act to be disrespectful to her.
Roland Garros takes place in Paris from May 28 to June 10. Russian and Belarusian athletes are allowed to participate in the tournament in a neutral status.
