The Slovenian cyclist Jumbo-Visma Primoz Roglic ha cattle this Saturday the twentieth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2023a decisive chronoscalada disputed in Monte Lussari, and has managed to overtake the Welshman of the UAE Geraint Thomasto which has snatched the pink jersey on the eve of the end of the race. Roglic has completed the time trial 40 seconds faster than Thomas, with which he is the leader, by 14 seconds, and becomes the virtual winner of the Giro, which only has the final stage of Rome left.

The penultimate day of this Giro, a very tough time trial with two parts, the first flat and the second with a very high level climb, It has been spectacular, very exciting. Its outcome has not been clear until the end of the stage. The last riders to reach the finish line, that is, the first in the general classification, successively beat the best provisional time at the finish line; it seemed that Roglic could win the stage, seeing the times he was setting at the intermediate pointsand two and a half kilometers to the finish, just when he was almost 20 seconds ahead of Thomas, who led him in the general classification by 26, He has suffered, in the middle of the uphill, a chain exit that invited him to think that all his options were going to ruin. But the Slovenian has not given in, he has gritted his teeth in an impressive final stage, and has been able to finish with 40 seconds ahead of Thomasto which the last kilometers have become long.

Yes ok the Giro was in a handkerchief, with three men in less than a minute (Thomas, before the time trial, had a 26-second advantage over Roglic, and 59 over the Portuguese from the UAE Joao Almeida), the truth is that the result of the stage has been a surprise, because Thomas has defended his leadership in an outstanding way until there were only a few kilometers left for the end of the day. The Slovenian from the Jumbo rode very quickly both on the flat and uphill, and from the start he had little advantages of three or four seconds over his rival from the UAE; but the latter looked very solid, confident, and kept up the pink jersey with brilliance. That Roglic mishap that we alluded to earlier, which has made his teammates and Jumbo coaches raise their hands to their heads, has given his victory even more emotion.

In the middle of a great atmosphere, with thousands of people on the roads, many of them from Slovenia, and as a finale to three weeks of the Giro that have been a roller coaster and three stages in the Dolomites that will remain in the memory, the triumph of Roglic will go down in history for how adjusted he has been. He had not yet won in this Giro, in which he had combined days in which he seemed to be going very strong and others in which he left doubts; but he has managed to arrive at his best moment at the decisive point of the race, and, unless the last stage brings a more than unlikely surprise, He is going to take his fourth victory in a big one, after the Tour of Spain in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Thomas, second in the time trial, missed the Giro almost under his final banner; but, at 37 years old, he has once again shown the high level that he treasures. Almeida, third overall, is only 24 years old, and is again aiming to have a great future for the three-week races. They are going to get on the podium in Rome together with Roglic, who will be able to wear pink on the most desired day to do so.

For this Sunday, May 28, there is the twenty-first and last stage of the Giro, starting and finishing in Rome. It is a flat day, 135 kilometres, in which the forecast is that there will be a sprint that could break the tiebreaker to a victory among the six sprinters who, so far, have won in this Giro. It will also be the day to honor the overall winner, Primoz Roglic.
