F1 driver Hamilton says Vini Jr. was “incredibly brave” in reacting against racism

The seven-times world champion driver Formula 1Lewis Hamilton, applauded the Brazilian player Vinícius Júnior, from Real Madridthis Thursday, for his reaction to the racist insults he heard in a recent game of the spanish leagueagainst or Valencia.

Vini, 22, who denounced the swearing he heard in stadiums, said that “racism is normal in LaLiga” and criticized those responsible for competitions for not acting effectively enough against the problem. The incident generated a wave of reactions, both in Spain and abroad.

“It’s devastating to think that in 2023 we still have to see and hear these things,” Hamilton said in remarks given to the press ahead of the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend.

“It brings me emotions from things I’ve experienced, whether it was in the UK or when I was racing in Italy, France or Spain,” he said. “The things people say can hurt a lot. I think he was incredibly brave”, said the pilot, referring to Vinícius.

Hamilton himself has demonstrated support for the fight against racism on numerous occasions and has become a symbol of this cause in the world of sport.
