At the age of 60, coach José Mourinho continues to make history in European football and, commanding the Italian team of Roma, won the Conference League in 2021/22 and is in the Europa League final this season. This Wednesday, the Portuguese coach revealed the only club he coached and does not have a “strong connection”, especially with the fans.
“I hope Tottenham fans don’t misunderstand me, but the only club in my career I don’t have a strong connection with is Tottenham. Probably because the stadium was empty in time of Covid-19. Probably because Mr Daniel Levy [presidente dos Spurs] didn’t let me win a final and a trophy. But, it’s the only one,” she stated.

Mourinho cites clubs he coached, but forgets two
With victorious passages through teams like Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Mourinho continued to justify his answer by listing the other teams he managed, but ended up forgetting Benfica and União de Leiria, both from Portugal, where he started career as head coach.
“Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United… I feel a connection with all the clubs. In Italy, I go to the streets and meet Inter fans, in London, Chelsea and Manchester United fans. Real Madrid… I feel this all over the world, because I gave everything and people are not stupid. I don’t think it’s a matter of winning or not. Sometimes the border is very small. It’s because I gave everything. In the case of Roma, it’s more important to win or not going to a European final. I think they feel that I wore the shirt and that I fought for them every day. Maybe people love it when I say that I am a madridista, interista, romanista”, he continued.
“They say you can’t like all the clubs. I like all the clubs, because I felt that I was also liked in those places. With Roma, one day it will be difficult, but we will stay connected forever, as I am with the my old clubs except Mr Levy’s club [o Tottenham]”, concluded the coach.
It is worth remembering that Tottenham was the only team that José Mourinho led and failed to win a title. In all, he stayed ahead of the Spurs for two seasons, between 2019/20 and 2020/21, adding 86 games and 44 wins.
Now, as coach of Roma, the Portuguese is looking to win the Europa League for the third time – he was champion in 2002/03, with Porto, and in 2016/17, with Manchester United. The team from the Italian capital faces Sevilla – the tournament’s biggest champion – next Wednesday (31), at 4 pm (Brasília time), at the Puskás Arena, in Budapest, Hungary.
