Conmebol investigates allegations of racism at a South American match in Argentina

Conmebol opened an investigation after the Colombian player Hugo Rodallega, from Independiente Santa Fe-COL, denounced that he suffered racist insults from fans of Gimnasia y Esgrima-ARG, in a game on Tuesday night for the Copa Sudamericanato Argentina.

“Conmebol is against all types of discrimination and has even increased punishments to combat racism in football,” said a source at the federation.

Rodallega stated that he was called “monkey” and “negro” during an argument at the end of the first half, after the expulsions of Felipe Sánchez, of Gimnasia, and Wilson Moreno, of Santa Fe.

“It’s sad that we come here (Argentina) and this happens. I’m not saying that we lost the game because of the people, but the issue of racism is tiring”, lamented the player in statements to the official broadcast of the match, which ended with the team’s victory. Argentine by 1 to 0.

This Wednesday, the vice president of Gimnasia, Juan Pablo Arrien, repudiated the racist insults received by the Colombian.

“We as an institution repudiate any specific and individual act that has taken place against the player,” said Arrien, who added that the club is working to identify the people who offended Rodallega.

“It doesn’t just happen in Europe”, admitted the director. “Football still has a lot to learn, but we have to fight to improve in everything we can.”

The complaint comes at a time of worldwide concern regarding racism due to the attacks suffered by the Brazilian Vinícius Júnior, from the Real Madridin last Sunday’s game against Valenciafor the spanish league.
