FIE strips European Games of European Championship status due to visa problems for Russians
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has stripped the European Games 2023 of the status of the European Fencing Championship. It is reported by Le Parisien with reference to AFP.
The decision was made due to the non-admission of Russians to the tournament due to problems with obtaining visas to Poland. It is noted that in this regard, it is planned to hold an impromptu individual European championship in October.
Earlier, the European Olympic Committees confirmed that Russian athletes will miss the European Games, which will be held from June 21 to July 2 in Krakow.
In March, the FIE allowed Russian athletes to participate in tournaments in a neutral status. However, the organization later denied entry to many athletes, including Olympic champions Yana Yegoryan, Sofia Velikaya, Sofia Pozdnyakova and Olga Nikitina. As a result, the head of the Russian Fencing Federation, Ilgar Mammadov, said that no domestic athletes would compete in international tournaments.
