The Italian government approved the recommendations of the IOC on the participation of Russians in tournaments
The Italian government approved the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in tournaments as neutral athletes. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
Italy’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) president Giovanni Malago said the country is in favor of the IOC’s guidelines and will abide by them. He stressed that the position of the country will be formalized through an official note.
In April 2023, Poland formed a coalition of European countries to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in tournaments. They planned to protest against their return to international arenas.
In March, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participation in tournaments.
