Gonzalo Escobar awaits the start of the Davis Cup final phase against Spain | Other Sports | sports

National selected, a native of Manabí, he did one of his last training sessions guided by Captain Raúl Viver and accompanied by Diego Hidalgo.

The left-handed Ecuadorian tennis player Gonzalo escobar, 32, is ready to face his debut against Spain in the Davis Cup finals, to be played at the Arena Madrid.

This Wednesday, along with Diego Hidalgo and with the captain’s instructions Raúl Viver, held a training match against the Swedes Andre Goransson and Robert Lindstedt in the central court of the venue.

Located at number 39 of the ranking of ATP doubles, Escobar said: “We are two days away from debut. Some things are missing to adjust, the issue of height I have felt it a lot, but we are coupled with Diego (Hidalgo). I think we have a good chance to win our point ”.

Given the news that circulated yesterday Tuesday about the loss of Spanish Roberto Bautista (# 19 ATP), suffering from an abdominal injury and that he will be replaced by Albert Ramos (# 45), the Ecuadorian indicated that “Spain is a strong team, they have options on that same level. If one of them leaves, they have such a good replacement. “

“Normally in a tournament there is pressure, nerves, a thousand things, but here (Davis Cup) you enjoy it. We are united, once a year sharing with the skinny guy (Raúl Viver) from morning to dinner”Said the Manabi tennis player, who this year has won two titles in doubles: Marbella and Delray Beach.

“My location helps (in the ranking doubles in the ATP) to the team emotionally. It has helped me to realize that the level (in professional doubles tournaments) is very even, and with Diego we can beat any couple; here the difference is minimal, the margins are small, and (victory) depends on which team comes out with the most enthusiasm and attitude ”, concluded Gonzalo Escobar, who on the ATP circuit is paired with Uruguayan Ariel Behar.

Ecuador will play in group A, at Arena Madrid, against Spain and the Russian Tennis Federation, on Friday, November 26 and Saturday, November 27, respectively.

18 countries participate in the Davis Cup finals: twelve winners of the 2020 Qualifiers (Germany, Australia, Austria, Colombia, Croatia, Ecuador, USA, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic and Sweden); the 2019 semifinalists: Spain, Canada, Great Britain and Russia; and two invited countries: France and Serbia. These countries will compete in six groups round robin of three teams each. The event will also have two more host cities: Innsbruck (Austria) and Turin (Italy).

The six winning teams, plus the two teams with the second best results, will qualify for the quarterfinals. (D)
