Demi Vollering (SD Works) has been proclaimed the winner of the Vuelta a Burgos 2023 after win the last stage with a goal in Lagunas de Neila with a clear superiority, attacking in the middle of the port to prevail alone ahead of the UAE runners, Erica Magnaldi and Silvia Persicowhich were second and third, respectively.
There were no surprises and the Dutch woman, who was the top favorite after missing the Vuelta a España, took the purple jersey, second place went to Shirin Van Anrooij (Trek) and third place to Ashleigh Moolman (AG Insurance).
Right after the start of the stage from Tordomar, the BePink rider Silvia Zanardi left the peloton, setting a 40-second time advantage, but just three kilometers later, she was overtaken by the peloton. Later, there were several escape attempts that did not come to fruition. In the end, the final was made up of Elisa Balsamo (Trek) and Aalexandra Manly (Jayco), who were joined a little later by the Arandina runner Sara Martín (Movistar), who managed to have a maximum time of one minute and 43 seconds, but from behind the leader was pulling the peloton.
Later a leading squad of 17 runners was formed in which Demi Vollering set the pace, slowly releasing the runners and only Trek runner, one of the favourites, Shirin Van Anrooij kept up with her.
The leader was losing time, but SD Worx’s trump card for this stage was the favorite Vollering and before reaching the 7-kilometre finish line, she left her pursuer. Her compatriot Van Anrooij trailed by 20 seconds and a field of five riders consisting of Ashleigh Moolman (AG Insurance), Chloé Dygert (Canyon), Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ), Silvia Persico (UAE) and Erica Magnaldi (UAE) it was 44 seconds.
With two kilometers to go, in the hardest part of the climb, the third group hunted down Van Anrooij and tried, but with more than a minute difference, Magnaldi arrived, followed by his teammate Persico who took third place with one minute and 38 seconds apart.
