Einer Rubio (Movistar) won the 13th stage of the Giro d’Italia 2023this Friday May 19, and Geraint Thomas (INeos Grenadiers) kept the lead in the general classification.
The route of the stage was modified by the organization and was reduced to 75 kilometers. Therefore, cyclists they did not have to climb the Grand-Saint-Bernard. So, the only two ports of the day were Croix de Coeua and Crans Montana.
With a shorter stage than usual ahead, the attacks followed one another practically from the start. First jumped from the Paret-Peintre platoon (AG2R Citroën) and led the way until the following cyclists joined him on the ramps of the Croix de Coeur: Jefferson Cepeda (EF Education-EasyPost), thibaut pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ), Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech), Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech) and Einer Rubio (Movistar).
Gee, Rubio, Cepeda and Pinot remained in the lead on the climb, although on the descent Paret-Peintre linked up with the quartet again. Little by little, the breakaways increased their lead over the peloton to 3 minutes and 40 seconds.
The escape arrived with 2 minutes and 56 seconds to the last ascent of the stage, to Crans Montana, and in the first ramps attacked Pinot. The Frenchman broke the group and he went with Cepeda. Shortly after, Rubio joined them.
I do not stop Pinot to attack, nor to reproach Cepeda, above all, his lack of collaborative effort. Rubio took few fights from the Frenchman, since he had enough to do the rubber from back to front. It was impossible for anyone to stand out. Everything was very controlled. Later, Rubio and Cepeda themselves tried it, but Pinot did not allow them to leave him planted either. While the Frenchman and Cepeda argued, Rubio reserved those forces for the opportune moment.
The die was cast and they played it between the three. With the finish line in sight Cepeda attacked first without much conviction, so Einer Rubio appeared, in a show of power, to take his first victory in a big with considerable ease. Pinot was second to 8 seconds and Cepeda third to 11.
The favorite group did not move in all day. Thomas’s Ineos Grenadiers set the tone and Roglic’s Jumbo Vismo accepted, so they reached the finish line just as they left Le Châble: together. Therefore, there were no changes in the top positions of the general classification.
Thomas leads the race with 2 seconds over Primoz Roglc which is second and 22 seconds over Joao Almeida (UAE Emirates) which ranks third.
