2026 World Cup teams will be grouped by region to shorten travel, says Infantino

The teams that will compete in the world Cup 2026, based in the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be grouped by region to avoid long trips in the first phase of the tournament, revealed FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

At an event in Los Angeles, where the official logo of the Worlds was released, Infantino said that the measure was due to the magnitude of the next edition of the competition.

It will be the first World Cup with 48 teams, and also the first with joint headquarters of three countries.

“The challenge is all the logistics that involve the organization in three host countries”, said the director.

“It’s a continent: three countries and not three small countries, three big countries. The distances, the times, the climatic differences too: altitude in Mexico, sea level in other parts,” Infantino told AFP.

In this context, for FIFA it is vital to create an adequate environment so that teams and fans have the best possible conditions so “they don’t have to travel too much, especially at the beginning” of the tournament, continues Infantino.

According to the FIFA president, travel and the organization of concentrations, in addition to team mobility during the World Cup, were discussed at a meeting in Doha, last week, between the 32 coaches involved in the World Cup in Qatar.

“In 2026 there will be some travel involved, but we will coordinate and ensure it is the best possible conditions for the teams,” Infantino said.
