Ecuador’s team hopes to complicate Spain and Russia in the final phase of the Davis Cup, in Madrid | Other Sports | sports

Ecuador’s best performances at Davis were in 1967, when they eliminated the United States in the quarterfinals.

Ecuador appears in the path of Spain and Russia like a small stone in the way of the final phase of the Cgrandpa davis, in matches that will start on the 26th in Madrid.

For the Ecuadorian team captain, Raúl Viver, both Spain and Russia appear as “the great favorites, not only to win the series, but to win the title of the current edition ”.

Viver, in statements to Efe, considered that it is a feat that the Ecuadorian team has reached these instances of Davis, on its own merits, and therefore compared its entry into the group with Spain and Russia with the religious parable of “David vs. Golliat”

It would seem that the options for Ecuador are minimal, but the team, led by the number one seed, will cling to them. Emilio Gomez, who at 29 years old, with a refined technique and a powerful right arm, is still unable to emulate the successes of his father, Andrés Gómez, the left-handed hero of Roland Garros in 1990.

At that time, his 30-year-old father won the French tournament after defeating, in a tight final match, the American André Agassi.

Unlike Andrés, Emilio better dominates his right arm, with which he has had interesting performances and has been placed in position 148 of the Professional Tennis Players Association (ATP).

Emilio Gómez with Roberto Quiroz, individually, accompanied by Diego Hidalgo (28 years old) and Gonzalo escobar (32), in doubles, they managed to eliminate the favorite in the previous phase of the Davis Cup, Japan, in March 2020.

That outstanding performance of the Ecuadorians 3-0 over the Japanese has given them strength for their upcoming debut against Spain.

In addition to conforming it on multiple occasions, Davis captain Viver has led the Ecuadorian team since 1994, without any interruption, thanks to his remarkable experience, a condition that he plans to demonstrate in this crucial series.

Viver, however, does not hesitate to comment that, more than a team, it has managed to form an authentic family, since Emilio Gómez is the cousin of Roberto Quiroz Gómez.

The nephew of the winner of the Roland Garros in 1990 also has his best weapon in his left arm, although the two-handed setbacks are his best shots.

Meanwhile, Escobar and Hidalgo, in doubles, understand each other perfectly and are also the hope in the final phase, considering that it was precisely the point achieved by this duo the one that consolidated the triumph of Ecuador over Japan.

The fifth member of the Ecuadorian team is Antonio Cayetano March, a 21-year-old who is presented as an important relief card for the national team.

Ecuador’s best performances at Davis were in 1967, when eliminated the United States in the quarterfinals, but lost in the semifinals against Spain.

In 1985 he also reached the quarterfinals, but was then eliminated by former Czechoslovakia.

The most successful player with the Ecuadorian team has been the Guayaquil Nicolas Lapentti, that between 1993 and 2010 he won 61 games, in 38 participations.

The actual Ecuadorian team has a tour of the different Davis Cup tournaments since the first decade of this century, when its main members replaced the brothers Nicolás and Giovanny Lapentti.

Ecuador’s Davis Cup team is at the top of the tournament with the great dream of winning the Cup, which also inspired its great tennis players of previous times. (D)
