French sports minister urged to punish footballers who refused to participate in LGBT actions

French Minister of Sports Amelie Oudéa-Castera appreciated the refusal of a number of football players to participate in a rally in support of LGBT people during the matches of the 35th round of the national championship. She is quoted by Le Parisien.

“I deeply regret that we do not have 100 per cent players in France who adhere to this principle of non-discrimination. We live in a country that has always encouraged respect for others, for human rights,” she said. The minister called on the club to punish the players who refused to take the field because of the LGBT action.

As part of the action, which took place on May 13 and 14, the players of the teams of the two top divisions had to play in uniform with rainbow symbols. Because of this, one Guingamp player and four Toulouse athletes missed the matches.

Earlier it became known that the National Hockey League thought about revising the holding of actions in support of LGBT people after the clubs refused to participate in them. League commissioner Gary Bettman felt that this distracted from the very essence of the action, which eventually fades into the background.
