The European Super League questions UEFA for blocking initiatives ‘that compete with its monopoly regime’

The promoters of the project stated, in a document, that UEFA wants to be the “sole regulator and organizer of European competitions.”

The promoters of the European Super League reiterated that this it is not a breakthrough competition and that “fully supports the values set forth” in the report approved by the European Parliament, questioning in turn the monopoly regime that UEFA maintains in European competitions.

In a document signed by Anas Laghrari and John Hahn as promoters of the Super League, indicated that “in no area of activity of the European Union would be permissible actions such as those of UEFA -based in Switzerland, outside the Union-, acting under a monopoly regime as the sole regulator and organizer of European competitions, blocking any initiatives of third parties that compete with its monopoly ”.

“European sport, and football in particular, urgently needs protection against the abuses that have been committed by a series of actors outside the European Union, who pursue interests unrelated to sports and use football clubs as a platform for their own interests, in breach of financial fair play and damaging the sustainability of traditional football ”, they added.

The promoters of the project, from which Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have not disassociated themselves, maintained that “the Superliga is precisely to protect European football against such abuses, ensuring strict compliance with financial fair play, guaranteeing the financial sustainability of the clubs and establishing a transparent and effective governance system for the clubs, and not for the benefit of third parties outside the European Union, whether or not they are States, that use the football for other purposes ”.

“We are convinced that the European courts and, in particular, the Court of Justice of the European Union, will protect the application of Union regulations, a regulation that the Super League fully respects, and we welcome that the European Parliament has also decided in its Today’s session focus its attention on protecting the sustainability of football in the Union, currently under threat, which has always been the central objective of the Superliga ”.

They also stated that they were “at the disposal of the European Parliament and the institutions of the European Union to work together to achieve these objectives”, as well as “of the different football players to engage in a constructive dialogue in order to address the aforementioned issues. and find the best solutions for European football as a whole ”.

After the approval in the European Parliament, with 597 votes in favor, 36 against and 55 abstentions, of the document that opposes the project, its promoters insisted that the Super League pursues the same objectives for the future of European football and a model that integrates the principles of solidarity, sustainability, inclusion, open competition, sporting merit and equity.

It was never conceived as a breakthrough competition. On the contrary, the Super League conditioned its mere existence, even contractually, to ensure its full compatibility with the participation of Super League clubs in their respective national competitions, either through recognition by UEFA / FIFA or, alternatively, by obtaining adequate protection from the courts of the European Union ”, they underlined.
