Russian goaltender “New York Islanders” Ilya Sorokin entered the top three contenders for the prize of the best goaltender of the National Hockey League (NHL) season. This was reported on the league website.
This is the first nomination for the Vezina Trophy in the career of the 27-year-old player. Swede Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins and American Connor Hellebike of the Winnipeg Jets are also up for the prize. The winner will be announced on June 26 at the 2023 NHL Awards in Nashville.
This season, Sorokin set personal records for the number of victories and matches in the starting lineup. He also leads the league in shutouts. In the regular season, the Russian took third place in percentage of reflected shots and sixth in reliability coefficient.
Last season, another Russian became the owner of the Vezina Trophy – Igor Shesterkin from the New York Rangers. He edged out Juuse Saros of the Nashville Predators and Jakob Markstrom of the Calgary Flames for the award.
