Peskov said that the Kremlin negatively assessed the non-admission of Russian fencers to tournaments

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov spoke about the Kremlin’s position on the non-admission of Russian fencers to international tournaments. His words are quoted by TASS.

Peskov said that the Kremlin is very negative about such decisions. “We consider it absolutely wrong to try to condition their participation in international competitions with some political requirements for athletes,” he stressed.

Earlier on May 11, it became known that the International Fencing Federation (FIE) banned the Olympic champions Sofia Velikaya, Yana Yegoryan, Sofia Pozdnyakova, Olga Nikitina and nine other saber fencers from participating in competitions. The head of the Russian Fencing Federation, Ilgar Mammadov, said that athletes who received permission would also miss tournaments.

On March 10, the FIE allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international tournaments. It was expected that the return of the teams to the starts in a neutral status would take place no earlier than mid-April. However, the process was delayed due to the nuances of the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee.
