The meeting ended with the score 2:0. Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored goals in the 8th and 11th minutes. In the 31st minute of the game, the referee Jesús Gil Manzano awarded a penalty against AC Milan, but changed the decision after checking the episode using the video assistant referee system (VAR).
Dzeko became one of the oldest goalscorers in the history of the Champions League playoffs. He struck the gates of rivals at the age of 37 years and 54 days. The record currently belongs to former Manchester United striker Ryan Giggs, who scored against Bayer in 2011 at the age of 37 years and 148 days.
