Euskaraz irakurri: Riejanne Markusek irabazi du Navarra Women’s Elite Classics lasterketa

Riajanne Markus (Jumbo Visma) won the Navarra Women’s Elite Classics 2023 after beating the rest of the competitors alone in the 136 kilometers that began and ended on Avenida Sancho el Fuerte in Pamplona after a day full of toughness and spectacularity.

Markus took first place comfortably with a difference with respect to their rivals of more than 40 seconds. Tamara Dronova-Balabolina (Israel Premier Tech) signed her first podium of the year and Ella Wyllie (Lifeplus Wahoo) was third. Ane Santesteban (Jayco AlUla) crossed the finish line in ninth position and she was the best Basque cyclist.

After the starting gun, 15 runners arrived unmarked at the first wall with more than a minute difference from the rest, a time that increased with the passing of the minutes.

However, with 24 kilometers to go, Meijering, Harris, Pirrone and Swinkels, that is, the favourites, saw no opposition after more than 60 kilometers that they had broken away. Pirrone relented and left the head of the race to leave his teammates in El Perdón. On the other hand, Erica Magnaldi pulled the car among the 25 pursuers. The main group was reduced to 8 riders (Markus, Swinkels, Santesteban, Dronova and Wyllie) before reaching Cizur.

The final blow would not be long in coming. Ella Harris and Meijering stayed alone until, with ten kilometers to go from the finish line, Riejanne Markus joined the party and headed straight for Sancho el Fuerte. It was the big surprise. The double world medalist escaped on the last wall.

In the end, Markus crossed the line solo under the applause of the public. Dronova-Balabolina came in second position at 47 seconds and Wyllie third at 1’06” of the winner
