The Latvian Gymnastics Federation said they did not expect Polstyanaya’s refusal to compete for the country
Secretary General of the Latvian Gymnastics Federation Natalia Prokofieva appreciated the decision of the Russian woman Elizaveta Polstyana to refuse to play for the national team. Her words are quoted by TASS.
“We did not expect such a reaction from Elizabeth, it is a pity that in this situation her emotions took precedence over common sense,” Prokofieva said. She added that the federation tried to find a reasonable compromise, but the final decision was made by the athlete.
On August 17, Polstyanaya announced that she was refusing to continue her career in Latvia. The reason she called the presence of her Russian citizenship, from which in Latvia she was asked to give up.
On August 6, the gymnast announced that she was banned from performing at the upcoming World Championships. Later, the Latvian federation allowed the athlete to take part in the tournament, but she had to bear all the expenses.
Polstyanaya was born in Latvia to a Russian family. She began her career in Russia, but in 2018 she received Latvian citizenship and began to play for the national team. At the 2021 World Championships, the gymnast took 15th place in the individual all-around, at the 2022 European Championships she was in 12th place.
