American fighter Covington wanted to fight Russian UFC champion Makhachev

American mixed martial artist (MMA) Colby Covington wanted to fight the Russian champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Islam Makhachev. He stated this in an interview with James Lynch, which was published on YouTube.

“I want to fight Makhachev, I like this fight. He won’t be able to pick me up, he won’t be able to interrupt me in the standing position, and he definitely won’t be able to hold me with a submission. So this is a very easy fight for me,” Covington said. He noted that it would be a high-profile fight, because this is a fight of a champion against a champion.

On February 12, Makhachev defeated Australian Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 by unanimous decision. He made his first defense of the organization’s lightweight title won in October. In total, in his professional career, 31-year-old Makhachev won 24 victories and suffered one defeat.

Covington, who plays in the welterweight division, has 17 wins and three losses. On March 5, he defeated compatriot Jorge Masvidal.
