John Textor replaces Jean-Michel Aulas as Lyon president

O Lyon announced on Monday that Jean-Michel Aulas has stepped down as executive chairman of OL Groupe and has been replaced by American John Textor, who bought the French club in December last year.

“During the meeting of May 5th, the Board of Directors of OL Groupe appointed John Textor as Chairman of the Board of Directors from May 5th until the end of his term as Director, following the interruption of the duties of Mr Jean-Michel Classes as CEO of OL Groupe”, explained the Ligue 1 club in a statement.

Aulas, 74, will be the club’s honorary president. The manager took charge of Lyon in June 1987, when the team was in the second division.

With his leadership, Lyon returned to European competition and won seven consecutive French leagues between 2002 and 2008, as well as the League Cup in 2001 and the French Cup in 2008 and 2012.

However, he had disagreements over sports policy with the team of American investor John Textor, who already controls football at English Crystal Palace and Botafogo.
