It was the most expensive investigation in the country’s history. The first victim’s body has never been found

A Claremont serial killer kidnapped and savagely killed at least three young women from the same affluent suburb. Despite the fact that the police conducted a lengthy and thorough investigation, which remains the costliest case in the history of the region, the perpetrator remained elusive for over 25 years. This is one of the most famous crimes of post-war Australia, and you will learn more about it in the miniseries “Claremont. The Killer of the Neighborhood”.

On June 27, 1996, 18-year-old Sarah Spiers went with friends to a club in downtown Claremont. Shortly after 2:00 a.m., she called a taxi from a payphone. Three witnesses saw him waiting for a fare at an intersection. When, five minutes later, the taxi driver appeared at the agreed address, the teenager was nowhere to be found – but in the testimony there was information that an unidentified car had stopped next to her earlier. The Spiers family still does not know where the murderer left her body.

It started with the disappearance of an 18-year-old girl. The serial killer has been elusive for over 20 years

Six months later, 23-year-old Jane Rimmer disappeared in almost identical circumstances in the same neighborhood after meeting friends at a club. After two months, her corpse was found in the bush 40 km away. The same pattern repeated itself in the case of 27-year-old lawyer Ciara Glennon, reports the Australian . The woman disappeared on March 15, 1997, and witnesses report that she was talking to someone sitting in the car just before she disappeared. Three weeks later, Ciara’s body was found by a man on a hike in the outback 30 miles outside of Perth.

The wounds on the bodies of both victims led the police to believe that the same serial killer was responsible for the disappearances. A large-scale investigation was launched – the search for the perpetrator was the most high-profile, longest-running and most expensive case in the history of the region. The murderer remained elusive for nearly 25 years, and the families and relatives of the victims remained unanswered for nearly three decades. The breakthrough came only in 2016, when investigators, after years of efforts, finally found the real culprit. The solution to the mystery, however, was shocking – it turned out that the criminal, who made entire generations of women afraid to leave the house after dark, lived for years in the same neighborhood where he murdered.

The creators of the documentary series “Claremont. The Killer Next Door” interviewed witnesses of those events, including the former mayor of Claremont, and interspersed the interviews with archival materials of the police. The first episode of the series will be shown on Sunday, May 7 at 10 pm on the Planete + channel. The next day, the material will be available on Canal+ online.
