The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of Moldova may impose temporary restrictions on the import of grains and oilseeds from Ukraine. According to RBC, this was announced by the head of the department, Vladimir Bolya, at a meeting with the head of the EU Delegation to the Republic, Janis Mazeiks.

According to the minister, Chisinau is preparing other measures to support farmers. The government intends to compensate farmers for the excise tax on diesel fuel used and subsidize the cost of fertilizers and plant protection products.

The Association of Moldovan Farmers asked to introduce temporary restrictions on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products, Newsmaker.md reports. The organization said the collapse in grain and oilseed prices has left thousands of small and medium-sized farmers on the brink of bankruptcy, hit by last year’s drought.

The executive director of the association Alexander Slusari told the publication that due to the export of Ukrainian grain, sunflower and corn at a dumping price, sometimes below cost, the situation began to put pressure on regional markets, including the Moldovan one. Local farmers are forced to sell their products below cost, otherwise it is more profitable for exporters to buy them in Ukraine and export them to Turkey. If the EU imposes restrictions on imports, but Moldova does not, “the flow will pour into the Moldovan market” and collapse it, he warned.

In April, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia restricted the import of Ukrainian agricultural products due to the losses suffered by local farmers. Then the European Commission banned the supply of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine to these countries, as well as to Romania. The restrictions do not apply to the transit of agricultural crops through these countries, they can freely circulate in other European markets. The measures will be in effect from May 2 to June 5.
