Biathlete Martin Fourcade said that the removal of the Russians is contrary to the basics of sport
Five-time Olympic biathlon champion Martin Fourcade explained the support of Russian athletes. His words are quoted by Francs Jeux.
Fourcade expressed the opinion that the suspension of athletes on the basis of their passport or nationality is discriminatory and contrary to the foundations of sport. “Athletes share a common bond. Russians can be above politics and propaganda for the sake of wrestling,” he said. The Frenchman stressed that at the same time he understands the position of the Ukrainians.
In February, Fourcade said that the possibility of the return of Russian athletes to the competition should be considered. He stressed that he was elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to protect athletes.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participation in the starts. It was noted that teams from these countries cannot be considered as participants in the competition.
