Cancer-beaten Russian hockey player signs contract with Washington

Russian forward Ivan Miroshnichenko signed a contract with the Washington Capitals NHL club

Russian Ivan Miroshnichenko signed a contract with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). This was reported on the team’s website.

The striker was drafted by the club in 2022 with the 20th overall pick. The rookie contract is for three years. According to him, the 19-year-old forward will receive 855 thousand dollars per season when playing in the NHL and 82.5 thousand dollars if he plays for the Washington farm club in the American Hockey League.

In the 2022/2023 season, Miroshnichenko played in the Kontinental Hockey League for Avangard. As part of the Omsk club, he played 23 matches, scoring three goals and one assist.

In March 2022, Miroshnichenko was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After three months of treatment in Germany, the player beat cancer and returned to training.

In total, Washington has three Russian hockey players: forwards Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alexander Ovechkin, who is the captain of the capital’s club, as well as defender Alexander Alekseev. The team failed to qualify for the NHL playoffs this season.
