WBC blocks title fight between Russian boxers Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has blocked a light heavyweight title fight between Russians Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev. The president of the organization, Mauricio Suleiman, told Izquierado about this.
Suleiman said that he would not allow the Russian to hold a title fight, stressing that this was the position of the WBC. “As long as there is no boxing in Ukraine, it will not be in Russia either. At least under the auspices of the WBC,” added the head of the organization. He made it clear that Beterbiev would have to fight mandatory title challenger Callum Smith.
At the moment, Beterbiev performs under the flag of Canada. On January 29, he defeated British Anthony Yarde by technical knockout in the eighth round. The athlete defended three world titles in the light heavyweight category: according to the WBC, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO).
On the night of November 6, Bivol defeated Mexican Gilberto Ramirez by unanimous decision at a boxing evening in Abu Dhabi and defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) world title. In total, he has 21 wins and no losses.
