The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the admission of transgender people to the Olympics jeopardizes women’s sport
The Russian Foreign Ministry appreciated the idea of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow transgender people to the Olympic Games. The commentary of the department leads RIA Novosti.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that such innovations threaten the existence of women’s sports, since men who have changed sex and have a physical advantage can be allowed to compete. “What principles of fair play and access to sports without discrimination, in this case, can we talk about,” they asked.
In August 2022, Russian swimmer Andrei Minakov assessed the possibility of transgender people participating in competitions. The athlete said that he is tolerant of the topic of sex change, but not in the situation with professional athletes. He called the participation of transgender people in tournaments unfair.
In December 2021, the IOC presented recommendations for the admission of transgender athletes to women’s competitions. They state, in particular, that athletes must be admitted regardless of gender or gender identity. Detailed eligibility criteria are to be developed by the national federations themselves.
