Tretiak called the ban on the Russian flag at the World Ice Hockey Championship in Riga wrong
President of the Russian Hockey Federation (FHR) Vladislav Tretiak praised the ban on carrying the Russian flag at the 2023 World Hockey Championship matches in Riga. His words are quoted by Match TV.
Tretiak called the decision of the organizers wrong, since politics and sports should not be mixed. He considered that it was not the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) that was to blame for the situation, but the organizers of the tournament.
On April 27, the head of the organizing committee of the Riga part of the tournament, Edgars Buncis, announced a ban on the tricolor and the flag of Belarus. At the same time, it is allowed to bring and hang out the Ukrainian flag.
On March 22, the IIHF Council extended the suspension of the Russian and Belarusian national teams from tournaments. The organization said that the return of teams to the world stage is not safe. The national teams will not take part in all tournaments under the auspices of the organization until the end of the 2023/2024 season.
