German Cup semi-finals have ‘rematch’ between Freiburg and Leipzig

Without the top three in the German championship after Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin were eliminated in the quarterfinals, the semifinals of the German Cup will have a ‘rematch’ of the last edition’s final, between Freiburg and Leipzig, as the most prominent duel.

In May 2022, RB Leipzig managed to lift the first title in its short history (the club was founded in 2009) in Berlin after an exciting penalty shootout against Freiburg.

Twelve months later, the two teams meet in Breisgau, with Freiburg hoping to offer their fans a rematch to reach the final at the Olympic Stadium on June 3 and gain momentum down the Bundesliga home stretch.

The players led by coach Christian Streich are in fourth place and maintain a two-point lead over Leipzig, with four rounds to go in the season.

Four days after the confrontation for the German Cup, the two teams meet again on Saturday, for the 31st round of the German championship.

In the other semi-final, poorly positioned Stuttgart, the first team outside the relegation zone in the Bundesliga, receives Eintracht Frankfurt, who have not won since February 4th but hope to count on French striker Randal Kolo Muani, author of a double in quarterfinals against Union Berlin in a 2-0 win a month ago.
