Lointek Gernika Bizkaia ran out of options to fight for the Endesa Women’s League title after lose this Sunday April 23 against Casademont Zaragoza by 64-52 the match of return of the quarterfinals.

The Gernika-Lumo (Bizkaia) team achieved a six-point lead (75-69) in the first legbut how lost by 12 the one aroundand was knocked out of the play-off.

The start of the game was overwhelming on the part of the local team, which scored 13-0 in the first seven and a half minutes with which they had turned the score around against an opponent who was unable to overcome the skillful defense. It wasn’t until there were two minutes and 19 seconds left when the Basque team scored their first points by Itziar Ariztimuño (13-2) whose team brought the score to the 13-5 at the end of the first ten minutes.

Things did not improve especially for Anna Montana’s team in the second quarter because, although they grew in scoring, they worsened in defense, a circumstance that made the Maño team shoot up the lead in their favor up to a maximum of 18 points on two occasions to reach the shore of rest with 16 (34-18) and the tie very on track.

However, the reaction of the Basque team came after the refresh time, scoring a 4-12 run that left the score at 38-30 and that placed them two points in the tie, opening a new stage. Carlos Cantero’s team reacted quickly and returned to their opponent an 11-4 run that raised the lead to fifteen points in the match and nine in the tie for the Zaragozans (49-34).

Within the roller coaster that the confrontation became, the 1-3-1 zone imposed by Montañana choked the Aragonese team, who saw how Gernika was approaching again and with a 0-8 run they placed 53- 44. In the last minutes, Gernika kept up the pressure and was able to move up 60-52, just two points behind in the tie, with 31.4 seconds to go, but Casademont Zaragoza kept up his game and from the free throw line took the match and the tie ahead (64-52).
