The game
Even playing with a mixed team, Manchester City dominated the duel during the 90 minutes. However, the first goal of the game took a while to come out. In the 40th minute of the first stage, Bernardo Silva was brought down in the area and the referee awarded City a penalty. Mahrez went to the penalty spot and converted.
Sheffield seemed to take the hit towards the end of the first half and were unable to recover as the game progressed. In the second stage, Mahrez continued his show and his team’s dominance. In the 16th minute, the Algerian took off from the midfield and, after a beautiful individual move, kicked in place to beat the opposing goalkeeper.
The goal gave Pep Guardiola’s team even more peace of mind. However, even with the match practically defined, City continued to look to increase the score. Just five minutes after the second goal, Mahrez received it from Grealish on the penalty spot and kicked it wide, closing the account and sealing his team’s place in the final.
