The technician of LiverpoolJurgen Klopp, made it clear this Friday that he trusts the evolution of Uruguayan Darwin Núñez, the most important signing for this season, although the striker has been relegated to the bench in recent weeks.
“It doesn’t help to go through a debut season that has been difficult for the whole team. How can a top scorer shine when the whole team is struggling?” stressed Klopp at the press conference ahead of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield in this Saturday.
“He’s been injured a few times, suspended on others… That’s not a problem, it’s a long-term project,” continued the German.
Núñez arrived at Liverpool this season from Benfica in a transfer of 82 million dollars (R$ 441 million). He has already scored 15 goals, but has lost prominence since the arrival of Dutchman Cody Gakpo in January and the recovery of Portugal’s Diogo Jota and Colombian Luis Díaz.
“The situation doesn’t bother me, I understand that for Darwin it does… He doesn’t smile at me when he knows he won’t start [como titular] and says, ‘Thank you coach’,” joked Klopp.
“But when you have five or six players available in attack you have to make decisions and that’s good,” he concluded.
Liverpool are having a season far below their expectations. Eliminated in the Champions League, the team is eighth in Premier Leaguenine points behind fourth place, the last to qualify for the next Champions League.
