Benfica debuted on the right foot in the Portuguese Championship. In the opening of the competition, the Encarnados easily beat Arouca, by 4 to 0, this Friday.
In a busy game, the Lusitanian team presented good dynamics under the command of the new coach, Roger Schmidt. The goals were scored by right-back Gilberto, midfielder Rafa Silva (twice) and Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández.
In the provisional leadership of the tournament, Benfica faces Casa Pia in the second round of the national league. Before, however, the team has a commitment against Midtjylland, for the return of the third round of the Champions League playoffs, next Tuesday. In the first leg, the team thrashed the Danes 4-1.
Benfica opened the scoring early, just eight minutes into the game. The person responsible for opening the scoring was Gilberto, who took advantage of Grimaldo’s cross and, with his head, sent it to the nets.
After piling up scoring opportunities, the Encarnados scored again in the final stretch of the first half, when Rafa Silva, also with a header, scored his own in the match. A few minutes later, Mateus Quaresma made it difficult for Arouca in the duel, as he was expelled after a hard entry into Rafa.
And there was still time for Benfica to extend the advantage in a busy end of the initial stage. This time, Enzo Fernández had a rebound at the entrance of the area and amended a shot between the goalkeeper’s legs, making the third.
The second stage had few emotions. With the victory on track, the home team managed the result and suffered little defensively. David Neres came to build good opportunities on the right, but it was Rafa Silva who decreed the rout after a good offensive plot.
