The referees warn of future “drastic measures” if the “campaign” against them does not cease
He Spanish arbitration ha denounced this Tuesday the “perfectly measured and organized campaign”, against him, “from different fronts of professional football”criticizing, in particular, the “permanent attacks” of LaLiga and its leaders; Thus, through a statement, They have threatened with future “drastic and urgent measures, which would have a direct impact on the competition”.
“We want to convey our deep concern for the unfortunate situation that has been generated around the group that we represent, and that is driven and promoted from different fronts of professional football, in what we consider a perfectly measured and organized campaign”, starts the note shared by the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), signed by the professional associations of Spanish football.
In the statement, the referees have regretted “the permanent attacks by LaLiga and its main leaders”, giving as an example “the video broadcast by its Competitions director, Luis Gil”. According to the referees, these images try to “indicate and ridicule the arbitration proceedings”: “It is one more example of LaLiga’s interest in generating an unbreathable climate towards our collective, sowing doubt about our decisions and undermining arbitration professionalism”, they have stressed.
For this reason, the referees of the First and Second Division request LaLiga and its leaders “respect and institutional responsibility in the face of an unprecedented event in Spanish football”: “LaLiga cannot permanently lament a reputational crisis in Spanish football and, at the same time, collaborate to generate it”, through a call for tension and violence against referees, “in a maneuver that only leads to the devaluation of our football and its social discredit”, they affirm.
With the statement, the Spanish arbitration has wanted “make clear” the “autonomy” of the collective, “which must be (autonomous), and always will be, from LaLiga and from the clubs.” “Despite the confusion in which they have tried to plunge the fan”, they lamented, “the federations are the entities in charge of organizing football in each country, and our establishment works with autonomy and professionalism for the good of arbitration and football”, points out the note released.
Reflection on “irresponsible” behavior
“A deep reflection is urgently needed in the face of such irresponsible behaviour, which must be stopped as soon as possible for the good name of Spanish football. We must understand football as a sport in which there must be passion and emotion, and where the protagonists have mistakes and successes; leaders, players and referees. Sport in general and arbitration in particular cannot be used as a means to justify improper and inappropriate behavior and conduct,” they specified.
The referees have indicated that this situation also “affects minors who start in lower categories and who lack security in the field”: “They are pointed out, insulted, threatened and, what is more serious, physically attacked, something intolerable and a direct effect of the smear media campaign that we are suffering from LaLiga and the clubs,” the statement asserted, after a referee was attacked in Ceuta this weekend in a youth game.
“For all the aforementioned, we would like to send a message for reflection, and so not having to regret any misfortune more than the ones that have already occurred, nor having to adopt drastic measures and with urgency that would have a direct impact on our competition”, the referees have ruled.
In the text, they also recall that “the CTA does not designate the referees, but rather a body called the CACP (Appointment Committee)”, made up of a member of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), a member of LaLiga and another member appointed by mutual agreement or, if it does not exist, by the Higher Sports Council.
“One of the members who for years was appointed by La Liga to carry out this work is the former referee Antonio Jesús López Nieto, who, contrary to what LaLiga is doing, upholds the autonomy of the arbitration group. López Nieto publicly stated that for 16 years he was ‘appointing referees’, he assured that ‘everything is a lie’ and asked for ‘reinstatement for the referees, for football and for credibility'”, the statement concluded.
