Tadej Pogacar(UAE Emirates) took victory in the classic Amstel Gold Race this Sunday April 16 after giving a exhibition on the 253.6 kilometer route that separate Maastricht and Berg in Terblijt.

Pogacar, double winner of the Tour de France and recently of the Tour of Flanders, showed himself to be imperial by attacking from afar, selecting the group of favorites and finishing solo with prodigious starts. in one of them he was left alone 29 kilometers from the finish line and he held out until the end to achieve his first Amstel. At 38 seconds Ben Healey (EF Education) crossed the finish line which was second and third place went to Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) who finished the classic two minutes and 14 seconds behind the winner.

Seven riders signed up for the first break: Vacek (Trek-Segafredo), Heinschke (DSM), Vercher (TotalEnergies), Vanhoof (Flanders-Baloise), Ludvigsson and Fedeli (Q36.5) and Urianstad (Uno-X). They came to have 5 minutes of rent, but the UAE had already decided to end the adventure. The team led by Pogacar went to work and hunted down the escapees.

The Slovenian Pogacar appeared when the dimensions were already going to appear splashed relentlessly until the finish line. He applied the “law of the whip” from afar. The big favorite selected, hit and rode solo on his bike. With 80 kilometers to go, the double winner of the Tour tightened the pace in the Cauberg to reduce the list of candidates to 11 men, including the British Tom Pidcock. In addition, Sheffield, Vermeersch, Ben Healy, Van Tricht, van den Berg, Geniets, Zingle, Lutsenko and Kron, got into the ‘ointment’.

Pogacar suffered a tire failure, but he changed bikes and the matter was fixed. He first attacked in the Cauberg, 36 kilometers from the end, taking Pidcock and Healey to the wheel. There were no longer 11, there were 3.

As if wanting to make it clear who was wearing the stripes, Pogacar hit the Kautenberg directly, 29 kilometers from the finish line, and the blow was decisive. He brushed Pidcock off, powerless to follow his wheel. Healey contacted the British, and although they tried to join forces to hunt down the Slovenian, Pogacar increased his income. Thus, he arrived with a wide advantage in the last meters, and won the victory.

From behind, Healy left Pidcock behind and was second across the finish line, 38 seconds behind Tadej Pogacar. Thomas Pidcock arrived exhausted in the final meters, barely managing to be third after crossing the finish line two minutes and 14 seconds behind the winner. Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), fourth and fifth respectivelyjust fell short of catching up and surpassing Pidcock.

Other blow on the table of Pogacar and a notice one week from Liège-Bastogne-Liègewhere he will meet again with Van der Poel and Van Aert.
