Alexander Ovechkin called Peter Laviolette fired from the Washington Capitals a great coach
Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin commented on the resignation of head coach Peter Laviolette. His words leads the official website of the club.
The Russian called Lavioletta a great man and a great coach. “This is business. As you saw, we lost friends, great hockey players, in the deadline, but this is business. It sucks that we’re in this position right now, but there’s nothing you can do,” Ovechkin said.
Earlier on April 15, it became known that Washington had fired Laviolette. The current contract of the 58-year-old specialist was calculated until June 30. It is noted that it was terminated by mutual agreement of the parties.
The capital club lost its chances of reaching the NHL playoffs on April 5. The team will not play at this stage of the tournament for the first time since 2014.
Laviolette took charge of the Washingtons in September 2020. He led the Capitals to the Stanley Cup playoffs for two consecutive seasons, where they both lost in the first round. Under the guidance of the Nashville Predators coach, he reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017, where he lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
