The Azerbaijani weightlifting team withdrew from the European Championship in Yerevan. It is reported by TASS.
The reason for the withdrawal from the tournament was the burning of the country’s flag during the opening ceremony. It is noted that one of those present approached the stage and burned the Azerbaijani symbol. The violator was detained, but later released without being held accountable.
Representatives of the Azerbaijani team stated that they do not feel safe being in Armenia. In their opinion, athletes are subjected to psychological pressure. “Normal participation is impossible in conditions when an atmosphere of hatred reigns in Armenia,” the weightlifters emphasized.
In September 2020, armed clashes began in Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia and Azerbaijan, which have been arguing over this territory for 30 years, have accused each other of provocations. During the fighting, Baku regained control of part of the territories lost in the early 1990s.
