the coach of Paris Saint GermainChristophe Galtier, accused of racist statements when he was coach of Nicesaid he was “very surprised” at a press conference this Friday, after the Public Ministry announced the opening of an investigation into the case.
“I am very surprised by the words that were attributed to me and that were transmitted by some in an irresponsible way, they reach me in the depths of my humanity”, said Galtier, who received the “support” of PSG.
“The club supports Christophe Galtier and wants the truth to be established by justice,” the French team’s press officer said on Friday before the coach’s press conference.
On Tuesday, independent journalist Romain Molina and the website RMC Sports reported the existence of an email attributed to the former manager of Nice Julien Fournier. In the message, he denounces that Galtier would have used discriminatory words in relation to part of the cast, with references to their origins and religions.
“He told me that he had to take into account the reality of the city and that we couldn’t have so many blacks and Muslims on the team,” wrote Fournier of Galtier’s alleged request. “He showed me his willingness to change the squad in depth, specifying that he wanted to limit the number of Muslim players as much as possible,” he added.
The current coach of PSG denied “with the greatest vehemence” the accusation, in a statement sent to the AFP.
Julien Fournier, who left Nice in July 2022, claims, for his part, that he was not involved in the dissemination of the email, although he does not seem to deny its existence.
The Public Ministry of Nice announced this Friday the opening of a preliminary investigation on suspicion of discrimination on racial and religious grounds.
