the danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard of the Jumbo Visma was proclaimed Itzulia Basque Country 2023 champion in the sixth and final stage with departure and arrival in Eibar. With this, Vingegaard entered the finish line first in three of the six stages disputed to win the 62nd edition of Itzulia.
The Dane launched the decisive attack with about 30 kilometers to go in the stage and left behind the group of riders, including the Basques Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) and Jon Izagirre (Cofidis).
Mikel Landa finished in second place in the general classificationwhile Jon Izagirre completed on the podium at the last moment after being third in the stage.
Jimmy Janssen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Nicolas Prodhomme (AG2R Citroen) were the first to jump out of the pack, but their adventure did not last. Later, a breakaway with 12 cyclists was formed: Daniel Felipe Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers), Valentin Paret-Peintre (AG2R Citroen), Emanuel Buchman (Bora-hansgrohe), harm vanhoucke (DSM), Esteban Chavez (EF Education-EasyPost), Bruno Amirail (Groupama-FDJ), Queen Taaramae (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty), Eddie Dunbar (Jayco AlUla), Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar), Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo Visma), Attila Valter (Jumbo Visma) and Marc Hirschi (UAE Emirates).
The group of 12 took the lead, opened up a gap, and then Bahrain Victorious took the reins of the peloton. The team headed by Landa reduced the distance with respect to the escapees.
Already on the ascent to Krabellin Chaves attacked, and Guerreiro and Kruijswijk left with him. On the descent of Krabelin the leading trio became a foursome with the addition of Valter.
Before reaching the Trabakua ridge, Mauro Schmid (Soudal Quick-Step), Igor Arrieta (Kern Pharma) and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) jumped out of the peloton. Schmid managed to leave Arrieta and Burgaudeau behind, and caught up with the leading quartet.
With 40 kilometers to go, Chaves attacked, but failed to break up the quintet. Then he attacked Schmid and was left alone in the lead of the race. However, in the first ramps of the ascent to Izua Chaves increased the pace and together with Guerreiro he left Schmid behind. Neither could Kruijswijk continue in the lead.
On the other hand, in the group of favourites, Jon Izagirre was at the head of the group, but the Jonas Vingegaard’s attack 30 kilometers from the finish line turned everything upside down. The leader started to break through and no one could keep up with him.
Vingegaard’s lead increased and the Dane rounded off his great career by claiming victory in the last stage and taking the final triumph.
Behind, the podium was at stake. The attacks followed one after the other, but it was Knox who managed to get a few meters ahead and finish the stage in second position. Getting on the podium was still at stake, and in the final meters Jon Izagirre managed to be third and secured third place in the general classification.
Mikel Landa crossed the finish line in eleventh position and finished the race in second place overall.
