Close to leaving PSG at the end of his contract, Lionel Messi must decide his future in the coming weeks. According to the Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona executives met with directors of The league to evaluate a deal that would bring Messi back to the Catalan club.
The conversations were about a proposal from Barcelona to raise the salary cap of the Spanish Championship, in order to make it possible to hire Messi in the next transfer window.
The plan is spearheaded by Barça director Mateo Alemany, who foresees cutting the club’s expenses with significant reductions in wages and the sale of players. The Catalan team hopes that La Liga will give a positive signal so that negotiations with Messi can move forward.
However, the talks could be stalled by recent friction between Barcelona and La Liga president Javier Tebas. The club would have asked Tebas to resign for presenting false evidence about Barça’s payments scandal to the former deputy of Spain’s arbitration board, known as “Caso Negreira”.
Barcelona does not deny interest in repatriating Lionel Messi, who left the club in 2021 towards Paris Saint-Germain. The French team’s attempts at renewing the Argentine’s contract have not been effective and Messi should be free on the market.
