French biathlete Emilien Jacquelin called for Russians and Belarusians to return to tournaments
French biathlete, four-time world champion Emilien Jacquelin called for the return of Russian biathletes to tournaments. His words are quoted by L’Equipe.
“From the point of view of sports, I miss the Russians and Belarusians at the World Cup. Without these two leading nations, it is less attractive,” Jacquelin said. He noted that it would also be good to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to the 2024 Olympic Games.
Russians and Belarusians do not participate in international tournaments this season by decision of the International Biathlon Union (IBU). The order came into effect in March 2022 and will remain in effect until further notice.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participating in tournaments.
