At Independência, América-MG thrash Peñarol in their Copa Sudamericana debut

For the first round of the group stage of the Copa Sudamericanao America-MG received Peñarol-URU this Wednesday, at Arena Independência, in Belo Horizone (MG), and thrashed by 4 to 1. Éder, Mastriani (twice) and Wellington Paulista scored the goals of the Brazilian team. Mansilla declined for the visitors.

Thus, Coelho adds the first three points in the continental competition and assumes the leadership of Group F. On the other hand, the Uruguayan team is in last place, still without scoring. Millonarios-COL, also with three goals, but behind by the tiebreaker criteria, and Defensa y Justicia-ARG complete the bracket.

In the next round, therefore, América-MG will visit the Argentines, at 9 pm (Brasília time) on Wednesday (19), at the Norberto “Tito” Tomaghello Stadium, in Florencio Varela (ARG). The following night, Peñarol welcomes the Colombians, starting at 7 pm, at the Estadio Campeón del Siglo, in Montevideo (URU).

América-MG’s goals against Peñarol

Right at the start of the match, two minutes into the first half, América-MG opened the scoring. Benítez took a free-kick on the left side of the area, and defender Éder climbed higher than the defense to head the ball to the goal and raise the crowd present at Independência.

Two minutes later, it was Mastriani’s turn to score for Coelho. After the ball was lifted and hit-back in the area, the ball was left to the attacker, who crossed it with his left leg, with no chance for goalkeeper Thiago Cardozo.

On the way back from the break, the Brazilian team needed ten minutes to score the third. After an error by the Uruguayan defense, Juninho kept the ball, invaded the area, dribbled the marker and crossed. Mastriani then arrived finishing from behind, at the top of Thiago Cardozo’s goal.

At 22 minutes, Wellington Paulista, who had just entered, took advantage of a cross from the left and headed it into the back of the net, turning the Minas Gerais victory into a rout.

Already in the final minutes, at 30 minutes of the second half, Mansilla received a cross from the right, rose in the middle of the marking of América-MG and reduced to Peñarol.

University wins or Ginmasia La Plata away from home

In another Copa Sudamericana match this Wednesday, Universitario-PER visited Ginmasia La Plata-ARG in Group G, at the Juan Carmelo Zerillo Stadium, in La Plata (ARG), and won by 1-0. Alexander Succar (from penalty) scored the only goal of the game.

Finally, in the second round, Ginmasia visits Santa Fe, at 11 pm on Tuesday (18), at El Campín Stadium, in Bogotá (COL). On Thursday, Goiás will travel to Peru to face Universitario, starting at 11 pm, at the Monumental “U” Marathon Stadium, in Ate.
